First Look

by David Mitchell on October 20, 2011

The house is small so, no grand entrance instead I used more graphic and color to give it some impact. Notice the door leading into the kitchen actually has hand woven bronze screening

About two years ago, or two years exactly, I purchased a wonderful little house…well, it’s wonderful now. After looking at 60 houses in Washington, DC and realizing I was with the wrong real estate agent, I met (totally by accident) Cherie Jones with TTR/Sotheby’s International Realty. This lady knows how to find you a house. In two short weeks she had shown me four properties that were all perfect. Then one day she called and told me she had found the house for me. It had just gone on the market at 11am and by 1pm I was well on my way to becoming the next owner. The house was built in 1937 and had never been renovated, I bought it from the original owner. It’s just what I wanted, something that I could tear apart and put it back together just the way I wanted to. One of the really great things about the house is that it is so beautifully proportioned that I wound up not having to rearrange any of the interior spaces. So, after 9 months of renovation and a year of decorating here is a first look at the nearly completed interior. Now, keep in mind that these are just what we call scouting shots so they are far from perfect. Oh, and I have also included some before pictures.

I widened and raised the doorways to give a more open feeling to the house.

This desk is in the corner of the living room and is made of vellum and walnut. The chair is from the 1930’s

During the renovation I decided to eliminate the small windows at the end of the room

After the windows were removed it left a cleaner and more interesting space

This is what it looks like now with the stone fireplace

As much as I love doing draperies in a client’s house I decided in my house to keep it simple and use only roman shades on the first floor

I decided to use only brown and ivory in the living room because it’s a small room, only 13’ wide and 18’ long, so I continued the graphic look of the entrance hall

The dining room is almost a perfect square and has beautiful light in it. The floors are oak and original to the house

The chairs and the light fixture are both Swedish Art Deco. The cabinet is a new piece I found in which I cut the legs off and changed the hardware

This étagère in the dining room is one of a pair made out of steel and walnut and holds my vast collection of creamware and iron stoneware. The étagère is part of the furniture collection I designed for Salvations

The kitchen is the room that had the most dramatic and costly renovation, moving the door, putting new floors down and replacing windows

The finished kitchen has a minimal look to it with one floating shelf that runs around the entire kitchen, a gray painted floor and an industrial table that I use as an island

One of the things that I really love about my house is that I have a large screen porch, 10’ wide by 20’ long. I am a designer that never uses the color black but just felt like the color was right for the space. I like the fresh look of black, khaki and ivory striped fabric.

Congrats, David!! Thank you for sharing. LOVE the living room fireplace mantel—so elegant, streamlined, and yet, warm! Some of these photos look like cover shots to me—especially the straight on view of living room mantel and dining room shot with the cartel clock. Hope to see the house soon!! Loi

David my decorating Bear, you're home is awe inspiring, fresh, bold and warm at the same time. I'm so happy you've found your place and wish you many happy years there. It did not go unnoticed that you had a Hamptons book on the dining room etegere….can't wait to see you back here the next time you swing by. Kudos!

OK, so I know this is supposed to be kumbaya-free zone, but WOWZA! This is amazing. O love how it feels substantial and fresh both at once. That runner on the stairs is money! Cocktails at your place.
