High Point; Observation #1

by David Mitchell on November 1, 2011

Another day another adventure. Elizabeth and I headed down to the annual Fall High Point furniture market last Friday. We packed up the mighty Bruce, made it through the mixing bowl and the pine-lined beauty of interstate 85 and checked into our rooms at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Winston Salem. After a short break and a little freshening up we took a walk around downtown Winston Salem to check out the local scene. Who knew that Winston Salem had so many cool and well designed restaurants, lounges and independent coffee roasters and shops? This must be a caffeinated town. We were up early on Saturday for a quick breakfast and off to High Point to hangout and talk to buyers about the capsule collection that I designed for Salvations Architectural Furnishings which was being shown at the Lee Industries Building. I must say it was quit exciting to see the finished products displayed in room-like vignettes. The response from the buyers and press was extremely positive and gratifying. After a long day of schmoozing it was off to Emery Wood Café to meet Jobi Blachy, Eddie Doumas and Jody Seivert to have a drink before we all headed to Hearst publications party. Hearst is the publisher of House Beautiful, Veranda and Elle Décor magazines. This party is one of the big events of High Point Market. Its definitely a see and be seen crowd with everyone from Bunny Williams, Thomas O’Brien, Barry Dixon and Mary Drysdale. There were numerous Washington DC designers and Bloggers who also attended including Jennifer Sargent, Lauren Liess, Patrick Sutton and Paul Fong. The party was crazy crowded. Then it was off to dinner with Jobi Blachy who is president of Edward Farrell Lewis Mittman and his lovely wife, Marissa who hosted a small dinner party with lots of wine, great food and an interesting assortment of guests. It was a terrific weekend meeting new people, finding some new resources and making new friends. Don’t forget to check out the furniture line on Salvations website. The images should be up the first week in November. If you are a local designer or architect and are in the area on November 8th, Barry Remley and myself will be hosting a Preview event at the American Eye showroom in the Design Center from 3:30-5pm. Come and have a glass of champagne with us and a cupcake or two from yummy, Baked and Wired.
